Session 4: Eat Well – How to Choose Foods
Adaptations from the original DPP include reducing the length of this session by covering the content of the original program session 4 over two sessions. The traffic-light based foods to choose guide was added to make healthy food choices easier to comprehend. A worksheet on how to making dietary changes to reduce intake by 2000kj was added.

Learning objectives
At the end of Session 4, participants will:
Understand that fat and sugar should be limited
Understand that vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, and water are necessary for good health
Understand how to use the “Foods to Choose” Guide
Intro & Goals
In this session, participants learn about energy balance and how reducing intake of kilojoules can lead to weight loss. Information about healthy eating is provided, including that fat and sugar should be limited, that vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, and water are healthy and can contribute to weight loss.
Suggestions are provided for healthy food choices including how to use the “Foods to Choose” guide which provides common food choices guided by colors of a traffic light (red for avoid, yellow for caution, and green for a good choice). Suggestions are made for how to make gradual dietary changes for long-term health improvement.
