For making money today, it has become not just fashionable, but a way of life for people to choose to work and make money online. There are several ways to make money online but if you are looking to work from home in Africa, many of them may not be for you. Yours truly has tried lots of them – article writing, web content writing, adsense websites, affiliate marketing, YouTube marketing, Fiverr and other micro-job sites, writing Kindle books, you name it.
In this course I will be short-listing a few student jobs opportunities or “job etudiant” as our francophone friends may call them, that you can safely start from home with zero investment.
But first, I have to tell you that these methods will not make you rich. If you are looking to find work online in Africa as a student however, I’m assuming you are only looking for some pocket money. There are ways to make a good income online but most of these require a lot of experience… and money to invest – just like any business.
This is my short list of student jobs for African students:
- Virtual Assistant Jobs
- Article Writing & Website Content Jobs
- Offering Services on Fiverr
How to Earn Money Online As a Virtual Assistant
Most online businesses can use a virtual assistant, from affiliate marketers and busy webmasters to e-commerce stores. Some of the most common tasks for virtual assistants are doing research, completing small repetitive tasks such as filling forms, updating the content on a website, writing short product descriptions or filling in the meta tags for pages on an e-commerce website, etc.
If you work as a VA most employers will choose to pay you a monthly salary, or they may pay you weekly, depending on the arrangement you reach when you start working.
If you are good at what you do there is no reason at all why you couldn’t take on assignments from two or more clients. Let’s say you earn $150 per month from each of these clients (this would be considered “minimum wage territory”); if you can nail down 3 of these contracts, we are talking about $450 per month working as a virtual assistant.
The best places to look for these VA jobs are UpWork.com, Freelancer.com, PeoplePerHour.com, and Guru.com. Make sure that you complete your profile… and make it shine. There is no need to reinvent the wheel… Find a VA profile that you feel is well written and model yours on it.
I would recommend that you put up a good profile of yourself first where you showcase your talent and ability, before you start bidding on jobs. You can do this on websites such as Clippings.me (It’s Free).
Article Writing & Website Content Writing Jobs for Students
Article writing is another means to earn extra money online without any investment. There are a number of job sites where you can sign up and start bidding for jobs, such as UpWork, Freelancer, Scriptlance, Guru, etc
There will always be a BIG need for articles and website content online. Still, from experience I know that it can work against you if you are located in Africa, and so it might help to target clients who are looking for local talent. The last time I used these sites I remember a client who was looking for someone to translate medical content into a local language in my country (Uganda)… that sort of thing.
But don’t restrict yourself just because I said so. My first and most lucrative job was with a US-based web design company, although at the time, I was using an American sounding username…
Don’t try this trick… I don’t recommend it. Most clients today will ask you to give them your Skype username and will want to “size you up” online.
With this sort of business, (if you want to make money writing), the more articles you write the more money you make. Besides UpWork and the other sites I mentioned above, you can also try iWriter.com. The difference with iWriter is that you do not have to bid on jobs – they maintain a feed of available jobs as they are submitted, and all you have to do is claim the article writing job and get cracking. The only problem is that you have a limited time to complete the article (I think its 2 hours max). The other thing is that the client can reject your article if they are not satisfied…
I will be giving you an iWriter tutorial later on in this course. As well as a list of “write for us” websites that pay good money per article – if it gets approved. For now let’s continue with another of my short-listed ways for students to make money with zero investment online… Fiverr
How to Make Quick Income As A Student With Fiverr
Fiverr is the world’s largest marketplace for people to make money selling small services (known as ‘gigs’). What you offer could be absolutely anything, from writing and translating, designing logos, social media posting, playing pranks and teaching to creating music, voiceovers and short video clips for people all around the world! The only caveat is that the price is always set at $5 (hence Fiverr..), but you can attach extra services to gigs for more (called gig extras).
When you complete a gig Fiverr pays you $4 (they keep $1).
The secret to earning a good income with Fiverr for those looking for online jobs for students in Africa is to find a gig that you can complete very fast… and hopefully (ideally?) one that you can automate.
I will give you some suggestions later… as well as tips and tricks.
In the next section I will list a few other “possibles”… ways to make money online as a student (“jobs etudiant”), before we settle on detailed how-to’s and tutorials on the methods on my short list.
